Classes
At Sunset Hills Nursery School enrollment opportunities begin at age 2 in our two year old class. Learning continues with classes for 3 year-olds, 4 year-olds and 5 year-olds.
A typical day includes a child directed period during which the student may move freely about the various classroom centers which offer puzzles, blocks, manipulatives, dramatic play, housekeeping center, art table and resource stations.
During circle time, the children gather together for stories, songs, finger plays and other group learning activities.
During snack time the children take turns serving snack which begins with blessing.

Finally, every class has time in the Big Room with tricycles, balance beam, rocking horses, basketball hoop, a slide and climbing equipment to foster gross motor skills as well as imaginative play.
Science, Yoga, and Library - Each month your child will participate in interactive programs with varying themes in science, yoga and library.
Field Trips - Parents will accompany their 4 and 5 year-old children on two different field trips during the school year; one to Simmons Farm in the fall and one to the Pittsburgh Zoo in the spring.
We also have an "All School Field Trip" to the Carnegie Science Center in March for all age groups and their caregivers.

2 Year Old Class - 2 days (M/Th or T/F)
For children who are two by September 1st of the school year. This program is an introduction to a classroom setting; helping teach the basic rules of the classroom while having fun each day. We'll do a craft, have snack, play in the Big Room and enjoy a story. No need to be potty trained.
Time: 9:00 am to 11:00 am
3 Year Old Class - 3 days (morning M/W/Th or T/W/F and afternoon M/W/Th)
This is the first experience in a classroom setting for many of our students. Our gentle routine has been developed to encourage participation from the shy child as well as more outgoing personalities at a comfort level unique to each. It is preferred that your child is potty trained before entrance into our 3-year-old program.
Time: morning 9:00 am to 11:30 am
afternoon 12:30 - 3:00 pm
4 Year Old Class - 4 days (M-Th) morning or afternoon
Our four year old curriculum is child centered and responsive to individual interests and needs. Our goal is to make sure that your child is ready to enter kindergarten and be successful. We know that all children learn at different paces and in different ways - we are here to make that fun and keep it challenging.
Time: morning 9:00 - 11:30 am
afternoon 12:30 - 3:00 pm
4 Year Old Fun Friday
This program is designed to give families who are interested in a longer school week that extra day. We have different 'theme' days to engage the students in fun topics as we progress through the alphabet: Snow Day, Game Day, Umbrella Day, Art Day, and MORE!
Time: Friday mornings 9:00 - 11:30
5 Year Old Class - 5 days (M-F) morning and afternoon
For children who are 4 1/2 by September 1st of the school year. This pre-kindergarten environment provides the older child the opportunity to continue to grow and mature. The program involves active exploration and discovery learning through play and activities that offer intellectual challenge. This is done by matching each child's cognitive developmental level with the appropriate learning activities.
Time: morning 9:00 - 11:30 am
afternoon 12:30 - 3:00 pm
Kindergarten Enrichment - Offered M-TH afternoons - May choose number of days to attend
Our Kindergarten Enrichment class is a time to play and explore. Activities such as creating in the kitchen, visits from outside experts, art projects, walks to the park, science experiments, as well as creative play are incorporated into an afternoon of fun and excitement. Open to all Kindergarten-aged children.
Time: afternoon 12:30 - 3:00 pm
Teachers from the Community
We enrich our programs by bringing in people from the community who share their talents with us throughout the year. They bring with them their love of science, nature, art, music, dance, exercise, fire safety, good health, nutrition, and many other areas of interest to the children.
Lunch Bunch
We offer the opportunity for all children enrolled in the 3s, 4s & 5s to stay for Lunch Bunch. This program runs Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays starting in October. There is no need to sign up ahead of time. You can send your child with a lunch to eat at school with friends, thereby fostering more independence and self-esteem. The cost is $12.00 each day, and the times are from 11:30 - 12:30 for children in the morning and afternoon classes. Please no NUTS or nut butter sandwiches for lunch!!!
Enrollment
Families that are already enrolled at Sunset Hills Nursery School are given first choices for enrollment for the following school year. Enrollment starts in February. See calendar for exact dates. Tuition for current students must be paid up to date before registration forms can be accepted.
Enrollment for the 2025-2026 school year starts on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, for returning families and Alumni. Enrollment for new families starts on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.

According to teacher and Director input, age cut-offs may be changed for older children.
